Lancaster (US-PA) - Keys for the City 2021 - expect 17 pianos - dates TBC

(2021 disclaimer: Whether we like it or not, Covid-19 changed the world in numerous ways. Our 2021 prediction presumes returning to some sort of normality, based on events history. To the best of our abilities, we’ll follow Public Piano announcements as well as general pandemic updates.) 11th edition to this Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States public piano event.

“Keys for the City” is an initiative MFE founder John Gerdy and a few of its board members developed as a way to bring the community together through music.

About the Organizer Organizer Music for Everyone claims that Lancaster, Pennsylvania is the “Street Piano Capital of the World”? This claim is based on these metrics: (A) Consecutive years for the program: “We’ve placed pianos on the streets for 10 years running (11 including the pandemic year), the most consecutive years of any city that we are aware of.“ (B) Length of program: “Our pianos are out for use by the public 24/7 for over four full months.

Again, a longer stretch of time than any other city we are aware of.“ (C) Piano per capita: “Lancaster can boast of having one street piano per every 4,237.5 residents (14 pianos for 59,325 people [2013 Census Data]).“ (D) Piano Keys per capita: “We can also boast of having one piano key per 48.15 residents!“ Since we love numbers as much as we love Public Pianos, we look forward to challenge these metrics some day. Until then, we’re just grateful for this long running program and very much look forward to play the Lancaster Keys for the City one day!
